I don’t know how it’s so hard for some people to understand the dangers of leaving kids in a hot cars alone for any amount of time. Luckily, a five-month old and a two-year-old were found before tragedy struck. A 25-year-old man in Detroit, Montez Sistrunk, was arrested after leaving his two kids in the backseat of a car while he went inside to gamble in a Detroit casino. He had blankets over them to try and cover them from anyone seeing them and had all of the windows covered and rolled up. Thank goodness a person walking by saw the children, after 30 minutes of being there, and immediately alerted the casino security. Temperatures had already reached around 120 degrees. They viewed surveillance footage and found the man still gambling inside the casino. He initially was just ticketed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was allowed to leave. The Detroit police then admitted they made a mistake in letting him go and he eventually hauled him back in for further charges. I’m not sure who was confused about the ticket to begin with but this should have been a serious matter from the start. It’s unfortunate this continues to happen. What we can do best as citizens is to be alert and vigilant when walking through parking lots in cars, you never know we could be at the right place at the right time to help one of the kids being left in the car.
